Varying idle speed on startups

So I bought a new truck a couple days ago, an 82 pickup, and it seems every time I start it I get a different idle speed. I've seen ir range between 2k rpm and 600 rpm. I drove it about 110 miles to get it back home and on the highway it did fine, but 3 times while driving slowly the truck would die while the clutch was pushed in and I'd have to wait about 20 minutes before it would fire right back up. Yesterday the truck started just fine but today it wouldn't start unless I heard my foot on the gas and even then the engine would run extremely rough and shake the whole cab. I tried adjusting the idle and mixture screw with no change to how the engine ran. So I tried adjusting the timing with little results. I assume it a carb issue but I'm not sure where to start with fixing such an issue.

Yes it's a stock carb, the previous owner replaced the original carb but the truck was sitting for about 2 years before I bought it.

Just my guess but it's likely to be a sticky throttle cable. You could take it out, clean it & try to oil it using a cable oiler, but it is 38 years old, so it's probably a better idea to just replace with a new one. Toyota originals are discontinued but there are good aftermarket ones:

No, I do not work for Rock Auto, they just to always seem to have the best prices, even with shipping added.

Rockauto is great. If i cant find it there or ebay its a rare part indeed.
13swords knows his stuff on these engines.
Good luck and dont let this little hiccup get in the way of your new truck. Theyre tons of work but theyre easy to work on

Thank you for the advice I'll definitely give it a go. I did buy the truck as a project and it's quite the project indeed.

Very cool. Im a fan of the aisin carb. A lot of ppl swap them out for webers, so its interesting that someone took the time to rebuild it.
they are known for being difficult to tune. Check out 13swords youtube videos abt the 20r carb. Im learning how to fool with them but hes the guru of anything 20r related.
