Trekker conversion

I have heard about the old toyota trekker conversion. I looked it up but what I can't figure out is how they attached the bed to the cab. Does anyone have pics on how they did it. If someone could even explain how they did it without pics would help too.

the bed(tub one piece and outer bed sides are another piece) was made of fiberglass and molded to the floor, the seat tray is also lowered about even with the cab floor. it was screwed down about every 3" across the floor/sides of the bed. for the cap to canopy i think they smoked a lot of dope because there were about 200 screws across to the top of mine.

winnebago did a really lousy job of sealing these things.. I got lucky that mine was not a pile rust between the cab/bed.

my photobucket account is acting wierd for some reason so I borrowed these pics from another trekker build thread:

if you are thinking of doing a similar conversion and make a walk through cab with a metal bed, you can do it by leaving 4-6" of metal from either the rear of the cab or the bed and bending it over between the two to cover the gap between the cab/bed.

my build thread is linked in my signature..

Thanks for the reply. How did they seal the thing? i saw one pic that it looked like just a rubber seal that was sandwiched in there.

besides all the screws like dropzone said they have this extremely sticky two sided tape/expoxy/sealant. then they had a rubber finishing gasket.

Thats what it looked like. I got an 88 single cab that I want to do a 4runner conversion on and the trekker seemed like a good starting point for idea on how to attach the bed to my cab. the gab between my bed and cab is a lot bigger than on the 1st gens so I don't know what to do about a filler material.

the butyl tape they used is crazy sticky and a major PITA to remove
i ended up with several baseball sized wads of it:

you could use a standard canopy seal, it is what I used when I made my top removeable.
for the gap between the bed and cab like I mentioned before, using the existing sheetmetal between the two will span the cab. just cut it and bend it over and screw it down. 4 Wheeler magazine did a nice write up on it in the mid 80's..hard to find the write up now though...

here are some threads from pirate: might give you some ideas:

Thank you for the info. I think I have an idea on how I want to do it. My next question is, should I worry about body flex at all?
