Tranny Grinds when I release the clutch

I just purchased a 1982 for $300 and I'm new to this so don't beat me up to bad. The problem I'm having is when I push the clutch in and put the truck in 1st gear everything is good until I release the clutch and it grinds and goes no where. Any suggestions? I can take off in 2nd no problem but no first.

1982 Toyota 4x4 4 speed

It sounds like 1st isn't engaging all the way. What I mean is for some reason when you put it in first the gears are not meshing together completely. Only the tips of the gears are making contact and the grinding noise. I don't know what the fix might be exactly. Shifter linkage could need tightened/adjusted. Worse case scenario is the syncronizing gear is shot in 1st and not allowing it to engage all the way.

Could be the shift fork is bad, shifter seat bushing most likely needs replaced anyway, might as well change it and see if there is any improvement, if not the tranny will need to come out and inspected or replaced but for $300 you had to know your hands would be getting dirty.

It is a good idea to always replace the shifter seat bushing before pulling the tranny, just to see if it helps. It's amazing how much that does. It's pretty cheap, and really easy to replace. Might as well try it before pulling the whole thing. Whether you pull it or not, you're going to want to replace that part anyways.

Changed out the shifter seat and a no go. I talked to Marlin and they advised to replace the top plate that holds the shift forks. "damit man".
