Timing Issues

I have an 83 Yota 2x4 22r, I'm having some problems that i just cant figure out. Never had a problem like this.

Ok, I have rebuilt the carb, new plugs and wires, cap and rotor the timing seems to be perfect but fully advanced and when I shine the timing light on the crank its not even close to the mark and when I try to retard it, it will die and even when fully retarded its still at the 12 before it dies. I have tried to take the distributor out and go one tooth forward it starts but its even further away from lining up. I go one tooth back and it wont start. Could it be 180 degrees out. Please help, I have spent hours trying to get it right. Trying to get it to 8 degrees BTDC

How is it running otherwise? Has the timing chain been making noise for a while?

well I have to idle it up to make it run right its sitting at about 1100 rpm but as soon as I try to idle it down it will die, the timing chain is not making any noise just cannot get the notch on the crank to line up with the TDC/BTDC markings its way off.

Yeah that's why I was wondering about the chain. I'm no expert, but that's where my mind is going...if the crank doesn't seem in sync with the cam, and you can't drop it below 12*, and re-inserting the disty a tooth off either direction doesn't help, the chain could be very stretched out, or have jumped a tooth. I'm assuming there wasn't recently a timing chain job done because I'm sure you would have mentioned it in your post. Somebody else may have some better ideas.

I guess another thing to check is the carb, since you just rebuilt it. Is the idle and all that set correctly? You know it's been rebuilt correctly? All vacuum hoses hooked up correctly? Not questioning whether you know what you're doing or not, just throwing any ideas of what could cause your issues out there.

I took it to a shop to have it fixed after he was done he put it on his test motor and tuned it so I could just go put it on the truck it ran perfect there but as soon as I put it on it would not start I had to idle it up just to make it run

Yeah off the top of my head those are the only things I can think to check. Good luck!

well i took the valve cover off last night, the chain has not slipped, also the the intake valves not on the compression stroke were jammed on the cam and would not move so I did a valve adjustment timing still at like 30* BTDC, any other ideas.

OH, I thought you meant the guy bench tested the engine, then you installed it in your truck. Well hopefully some other people will post up, 'cause I can't really think of anything else.

With my limited knowledge, I would say that if, to stay running well, you've got to be advanced as far as 30*, then either the disty is off or the cam-to-crank timing is off, meaning timing chain being a tooth off. There may be other things but that's all I can think of.

I have this same problem. I can't figure it out. My timing chain is fine, I changed it Saturday thinking it was the problem. I'm currently running a Newer weber 32/26 carb. I had the same timing problem with the stock carb though. Anybody have any ideas? Maybe the cam?

I'm not near my truck and have not had the balancer off the motor before- But does the balancer have an inner metal ring with a rubber cushion, and then the outer metal ring with your timing mark?

If so, the outer ring may have slipped on the balancer. GM's were good for that once in a while.

you might find top dead center and make sure the marks are right.

Total timing should be set at 30-32 degrees all in at about 2000 RPM. Idle should be about 800-900 RPM at idle. If carb is okay, check for vacuum leaks.

Weber carb is good no leaks. could a leaky intake cause this problem? if I spray starter fluid around it should the motor speed up if its leaking?

Yes, a leaky intake, bad vacuum hose (emission system), brake booster, etc. could cause a problem with setting idle (smooth idle)
