Terrible gas mileage!

you really need to research gasoline octane and how it work, and what those little numbers mean. I said nothing about your truck pinging, it wont on 87 and certianly not on anything higher, but what it will do is not completly burn the 92 you are wasting your money on. you sound young, enjoy your truck. research is your friend compadre'

Touchy touchy. People are ripping every post on YT? Uhm...
I see what's going on in this thread more as good discussion that will hopefully leave us all more edumacated than when we started. I agree a lot of what people post on here is just what they've read somebody else post and a lot of us (me included) are guilty of doing it now and then. But nobody told you you were stupid or insulted you, nobody's getting remotely sore or worked up except you, so..
Drive your truck however you want! It's yours. If you are going for the best gas mileage then yes, you're doing it right and the input will help the OP and so it's good information. But don't get upset that people have differing opinions. My impression is that 2600 is at the low end of the optimal rpm range for these engines. In some gears 2600 causes the engine to lug, which is not good. It will also, as mentioned, contribute to carbon buildup, and especially with carbureted engines, the conventional wisdom through the years has been that you've got to get it up to high rpms regularly to keep the carb passages cleaned out.
Like I said, if you're going for strickly good gas mileage over the short run, what you're doing is right.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree some people say it works and some say it doesn't, I believe it does fer now. I have owned about 11 cars most of them were fuel injected and all of them ran better when tuned properly and when I used a higher octane fuel at least 89 octane. But once again I'm just saying what is happening. I do realize the power ban for these engines and you can run them alot harder than I'm going to run mine dont get me wrong I will get on it every once in a while thats just for fun..I had a Scout II its was purdy good but my 4runner is prreetty good. Pumpt

Ok, we agree then. I don't know anything about octane so I won't comment. I run mid-grade in my truck but that's just because. The one thing I will say about fuel that does definitely matter in these older trucks is that you really need to avoid ethanol if possible. Or at least go for the smallest % possible. I guess in Nebraska it gets up above 50% ethanol in their gas and that will just destroy these trucks.

you are running 89 "just because"? why waste money? I will let you guys know one time. octane with a higher number burns slower. THATS IT!! you will not gain anything by using it in a low compression engine not designed for it. as an engines compression goes up, you need a gasoline that resists igniting so you do not get pre ignition! pinging! detnation, w/e you want to call it its the same thing. why throw your money away? seriously, in your mind you may think it is doing something but its only ewasting money. but there is a very well known saying for that lol

one more thing. when you run higher octane then needed you risk carbon build up and pre ignition which is when the cabon causes the mixture to ignite before the plug can and that is not good! but to each their own. carry on!

95 yoda, send me a link where you are getting this information cause that is new to me I'm not say I know everything but that just seems wack. Like I said before the cars that I have owned before actually required higher octane fuel like my Audi A4, WRX, Cadillac Eldorado and my Honda which I dropped a h22a prelude motor in... its preedy good. So higher octane rather than crappy 87 seems like a waste of money after a tune up. So if Im getting 40 miles more per tank and spending $2.47 extra it seems like its worth it to me. Maybe i have some mods I don't know about giving my truck a higher compression ratio? I don't know its my first 4runner it used to feel like it didn't have any power and now it accelerates better. Again just the results of what I did all together not the results of the fuel I used.
83 yeah I am not a fan of Ethanol either no matter what car I'm driving

A freind of mine who used to live in Nebraska was telling me if he lived there he would only lease vehicles, so he could get a new one every couple years, rather than have the high ethonal ratio kill his vehicles.

I was filling up at a station that uses "up to 10% Ethanol" in their gas for about 2 months in the summer, their lowest octane rating at the pump 90 and it was slightly cheaper than everywhere else's 87 so why not..
Started filling up at Chevron and my mileage increased around 40km per tank, dont know if it was my driving style or the gas but it was pretty consistent.
