Sounds like a vaccum leak somewhere. Vacuum advance, maybe?

I get 17-18 around town, 23-25 highway with 34" Swampers and 4.88's.

Thanks! well, i've got to order a new idle jet bolt because mine fell out while driving to work yesterday...awesome. I have a 32/36 DGEV weber carb with an electronic choke. I'm thinking about rebuilding it, or at least retuning it. Island_Yota might be right about the exhaust leak. My connection from headers to down pipe sucks. anyone know stock tire size for a first gen 4wd?

That tire size calculator worked awesome. So, if i've got it right, my tires will have a 25% difference. making my gas mileage OK.

Time to go tune a carb and look for leaks!

Thanks for helping me!

The stock tire size was some oldschool thing like H78 or something weird.

I wonder how much having a carb vs efi would affect it. I was getting 19 with a bad cam. And it was REAL slow and all stock. of course my tires were at 95 psi...

The tires on my truck when I bought it were 225/75-15s. But now they are 31 10.50s mud tires!

So when I got my 874runner sr5 I was getting 14 mpg in town 16hwy without calculating oversized tires, So I have a 22re, 5 speed w56 trans, stock gears (4:10) and 31.5 inch tires. So I gave it a tune up (new cap, plugs, wires, then I did a couple of seafoam treatments) after all that i gained 1 or 1.5 mpg. So I changed the way I way driving again 1 more mpg, not good enough so I changed differential fluid did nothing, then I changed out the fuel filter(some say its a PIA) its not that bad, and cleaned out the intake manifoldand also 92 octane premium costco gas and with the tire calculations I'm getting about 19 to 20 in town. I have not done much Hwy driving but Im sure I'm well over 23 hwy mpg. Anyway hope this helps someone Driving Style EFFECTS THIS ALOT. I drive slow and try not to go over 2600 rpms.

Sometimes what's the best for gas mileage is the worst for your engine...

Running 92oct. in the truck is doing nothing but parting you from more of your money, it will not increase mileage.

Not true.
Several times a week I make a 220 mile round trip to go snowboarding with my Subaru, If I use Supreme I'll use 7.4 gallons, If I use regular 8.6, and If I use any fuel with alcohol added I'll use an extra gallon. I've made this trip hundreds (thousands maybe) of times with the same results every time. If I take the freeway it adds 15 miles to the trip and another 1.5 gallons of gas.

Good for you

I will say your post is more on topic than mine, but I wasn't giving you a hard time, so I don't see any need throw out insults. I'm just saying that if you never get your engine up above 2600 you're going to have serious carbon buildup. These engines were meant to rev.

using a higher octane then he needs for his lower compresion engine will lead to carbon build up, most people have no idea about octane. it burns slower for higher comp. engines to eleminate pre ignition and if used in a lower comp engine it actually is worse then using the fuel oct designed for it. take my mx bike, if I run under 97 or so octane it pings like a mother!

83,
I bought this truck a year and a half ago and its got 256,000 miles who knows who drove it before me? I dont know how they drove it I was just saying what I did ya know.

95yota,
So I wonder how much of your knowledge is derived from reading what others "think"... My 22re does not ping or run bad or I WOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT IT DID. I tired of people ripping everypost on YT when people are trying to share useful information... Also there is math involved .19 cents times 13 gallons = $2.47 wow I dont know how I'm ever going to make that money back, but I got a couple ideas. So dont listen to me 95yoda but I'm the one getting better mileage than you
