Just bought a 1983 Toyota pick up had it about a week now when I first bought it I did not smell any gas . The truck was straight piped but unfortunately I live in so cal and in order to register it in my name I had to get a smog test which required me to get a California approved catalytic converter . I got one and got it welded on but ever since then I noticed a strong odor of gas when I’m driving the truck . It seems very random as well this morning I didn’t smell it but then I went on a drive tonight and it reeked the whole time . Not so much on the way back but it was still there . I’m sure it’s worth mentioning I switched from 87 the previous owner was running to 93 . I did the switch after I got the converter put on . I’m wondering if maybe the carb needs adjusted or possibly something else . I’ve also noticed what looks like a small leak in the rubber tube that connects what I think is the mixture control system to the engine . If I need to explain any further let me know please

 

Definitely switch back to 87 octane fuel. Not enough spark to make use of 93 and you're wasting money. Why switch this in the first place?

Then, throw that weird looking air filter on the end of the actual air filter away. If you don't have the proper filter in their then go get one at Autozone. They're cheap and work 1,000x better.

Replace any cracked pieces of rubber. Look for leaking fuel while it's running but my guess is it's been running rich since it has been in your custody.
Smelling fuel has nothing to do with the re-addition of a catalytic convertor.

 

Good lesson here, if you live in Cali and the seller doesn't have a current smog test make them handle it prior to sale or cut the price of said sale.
The fuel smell shouldn't have anything to do with the catalytic converter, but if you're running rich that cat won't last very long.
Check every fuel line for leaks and repair them.
Then work on getting the carb dialed in, I can't help there.

 

The fuel pump was leaking gas when it was turned on . I ended up swapping it out with an autozone one for now so far fixed my issue thanks for the input
