Stripped cam cap hole

Can I run a tap down in there?
A little longer bolt in that hole? I could catch a few threads.
Some kind of insert?
New head?
It started well, but never grabbed, like it was already stripped.
Thanks

Is this head a new casting or old that you put a new cam in?

If it's new, I'd look into the process for a free replacement under warranty. If old helicoil should be fine. Those bolts don't get much torque, iirc it's around 12-14 ft/lbs.

How do I remove this bushing so I can tap this for a insert?

Those bushings are just press fit in there and probably not that tight. When my Engnbldr head showed up, I was cleaning off the protective oil film with brake clean and one fell out when I had it upside-down.

Someone may have a better idea, but I'd start with a penetrating oil, put a short piece of steel rod inside and clamp the outside with locking pliers then gently twist back and forth. The purpose of the short piece of rod is to prevent the bushing from deforming, so make sure it's a real close fit.

Getting ahead of where we're at, but just thought of it on seeing the new cam.

You might already know all this but before firing it up again smear assembly lube around the cam lobes and rocker pads. Use a break-in oil and follow whatever break-in procedure revving the cam shaft manufacturer recommends or that nice new cam will go flat quick.

Yes I've got the break in lube.
Talked to Todd at Engnbldr and he told me the break in steps.

No luck on the bushing. Started to burr it up a little, so I quit.
I was afraid I wouldn't get the cap on right, but it's ok.

Hmm, bummer. Hopefully someone with more machinist-skills than me can chime in.

I guess I can destroy it getting it out and just get a new one, but I hate to mess up anything else in the process.

Could I just drill and tap on through it, or would that defeat the purpose of the bushing?

The coil repair insert will probably be larger than the inner diameter of the bushing. If not then sure, drill and tap right through it. It needs to be there in some form otherwise the cam cap could move slightly and bind against the cam while tightening it down.

That's correct. Insert is larger then bushing.

Update

Well I got that cam cap bushing out.
I used a 1/8 pipe thread tap. It fit perfect. A couple turns and it walked right out.

Bought the helicoil kit, but the tap wouldn't allow it to go down deep enough.
So I ground it so it was more of a bottoming tap, if that makes sense.
Now the insert will go down past the shoulder in the hole.
Cleaned all the bits and little pieces in the hole.

Reinstalled bushing, cap, and torqued down all caps to 14ft/lbs in a couple of steps.
