softopper review

i primarily built my 1980 as a weekend trail basher, fishing, general fun truck. not really a comfy road trip machine but i did take it on a 7 hour away wheelin trip a few months ago with no issues. i had a camper top for it but it was more a hassle than anything when i wanted it off for whatever reason. i have had a softopper on my 1st gen runner for a few years and love it, decided to get one for this truck and its the best decision i made yet. makes for a great shady spot for coolers and doggos, can get you out of the rain when camping, easy to install, looks fantastic. total cost is about 800 bucks after shipping. if you have the import bed (rolled on outside) the clamps they provide will show on the outside of the bed which i did not like so i threw them out and slapped some bolts through the support framing into the bed rails. took me about 45 mins to install with drilling holes, if using clamps probably about 30 mins. just like working with a jeep top, its way easier if you throw it out in the sun for a bit before you start.

Thanks for the review! These soft toppers definitely look better on old Toyotas vs a hard topper.

I have a softtopper on my 4Runner and I love it. Had a kayline brand top several years ago and it was sub-par, the Softopper is much better quality. I keep my 4Runner in the garage, but I've left it for weeks outside in the rain and it's never been wet inside. My hard top has not been back on since I've owned the Softopper.

Drilling process and fitment

Could you send a video of how you've attached it without the included clips? I have an 86 with the import bed and also would like to create the cleaner look. Lemme know!

just run some holes through the aluminum square tubing base rails and down through the bed rails. Use some little m8 bolts and some large washers to help distribute the torque (on the aluminum tubing). There’s really no other way to do it. If you’re not comfortable drilling a few holes in the bed rails I wouldn’t recommend this kit.
