smog system on 22R 82 pickup
I'm new to this forum and smog systems in general, my previous trucks have been pre-smog. So now I have an 82 toyota with a 22 R engine but I think not the original engine It possibly has all the smog pieces from the new engine connected to the engine- runs fine but there's brackets not bolted down. It also has parts of the original system and hoses not connected, ends plugged. So I figure to pass smog in CA I need to clean this mess up- Can I tell what year the engine is from the serial number in the side of the block and from there, come up with a schematic of what should be connected to what? Or should I be trying to make it all the right bits and pieces for an '82 regardless of the year of the engine? Any help would be appreciated as I am out of my depth on this.

First there is a major break down in the 22R series, there are two different styles of blocks matched to a specific type of head for each. From 81-May 84, was what are referred to as early 22R's, from June 84-85 are referred to as late style 22R's. On this next bit, I know that they're different but can't remember which goes with which. One used a combination of a tall block and a short head, while the other used a shorter block and a taller head. The easiest way to tell the difference is by the valve cover, the early style uses a rounder cover with a slanted front, while the late style uses a more square, blocky cover. However, since the covers are interchangeable, it's no guarantee of what motor lies beneath.
The BEST way to tell the difference between early and late is a casting mark just rearward of the motor mount on the drivers side, in the shape of a circle with two rounded tabs coming off of it at about 10 and 4 on the clock as youre looking at it.
As to the specific year, I'm not sure if there is a data base somewhere to search serial numbers in. And you will have to look up California's laws to see whether you need to smog in accordance with having the engine that you have or based on the year of the truck.

Thanks for the info, I now think it's an 88 engine carburated not efi. Carfax says it passed smog last feb.. Gonna keep mining for info- There sure is a lot of obscure information hiding in the cornors of the internet.
