Hey guys. I have a 1981 long bed pickup. 22r automatic. Figured I'd check here since ya'll have helped me countless other times! I was driving home from work today when my car died on the freeway. She started back up again and got me to town, but quickly died again after that. Checked the oil and damn near empty. I walked down the road and picked up a fresh jug and filled her up. No luck starting up. Pretty bad sound when I try. No luck moving the belt either. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

 

Engines run out of oil have a VERY bad prognosis.

Shame on you for running it dry. and then trying to run it some more to get home.

 

Honestly I'm having a pretty rough time in my life right now. More shame is the last thing I need. But thanks for letting me know how bad it is.

 

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but nature and machines have no sympathy, or compassion.

When bad things happen in nature, or with machines, there are no take backs, or do overs.

You might have minimized your troubles, had you got a tow, or added oil after the first bump.

Do you monitor your coolant temps and oil pressure while you drive?? Did you notice anything untoward before failure???

 

Yep. I heard it getting worse. But guess what. When there's no emergency lane on the I5 you don't just sit waiting for a tow truck. That gets people killed. Great holyer than thou attitude though. So helpful.

 

My 'attitude' did not cause your problems.

If you had my attitude and outlook, your truck might not be dead.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. It's true that a motor run out of oil does not lend itself to longevity.
The 22R is a simple, resilient thing but if you put a wrench on the crank pulley and it won't budge then you have likely seized it up in one way or another.

On the bright side, they are pretty cheap. Go get one from a junkyard that spins and slap it in there.

And remember to always check your fluids! Hopefully you can get it back on the road and things turn around for you.

Hook it up to four or five starter motors running about 48-96 volts and hope for the best.

 

Stuff happens. I somehow blew a headgasket last summer and had to rebuild the top end. Its never the right time for these things to occur. In fact now that im thinking about it, ive messed up a handful of cars out of negligence.
even if it is seized up, you can find early 22r blocks for a couple hundred. Hopefully its salvageable but if you gotta get your hands dirty, then so be it. I hope you have another car to drive while you figure this out. The hardest part is being stuck without transportation.ive been there too

 

Where you located? Maybe someone could help you figure it out or has a short block sitting around

 

Pull the plugs out, get a 2 bottles of the cheapest transmission fluid you can find, dilute 1 bottle with a little mineral spirits or paint thinner ( 80 percent trans fluid 20 percent mineral spirits/paint thinner ) squirt that mixture down each cylinder until she's full in each.

Take the 2nd bottle of transmission fluid ( don't dilute this one ) remove rocker cover and pour this bottle over the valve springs, timing chain, cam, distributor gear ECT. Replace valve cover & get your best 19mm socket , preferably an impact socket. With the truck safely chocked and in neutral gently try to turn the engine both ways about a tiny little amount. Yes both ways but just to get it to budge. If it will & I bet it will then rotate it the correct way until it has puked out all the 80/20 mixture out of the cylinders.

Drain the oil, replace with your choice of oil ( I use Walmart/SuperTech 10w/40 diesel oil ) Fire it up and see what happens. I hope it comes back to life & gets you by until you can either rebuild or replace it. I saved a 350 Chevy that had this happen & they're not very tough engines in my personal opinion. It smoked a little but ran afterwards

From the description of what went wrong, it sounds like you spun a rod bearing to me.

 

If you did what I'm suggesting won't help you, your only hope is the rings seized in the cylinder.
