removel of valves on 22r

hey im in the middle of rebuild my 22r on my 81 pick up. i was wondering if theres any way to take out the valves with out an SST tool?

a hammer extension a 17mm deep socket. hit the top of the valve retainers and the keepers pop out

put a couple of rags under to cushion the valves or you risk bending a valve....
