Re-doing an 81 4X4 Need advice

Hi folks:

I am brand new to this forum and hope I am posting to the right place. I am going to re-do an 81 4X4 pickup and was thinking of putting in a 4.3 litre chevy. I would probably get a short block from an engine place in town and was thinking of Edelbrock aluminum heads. I want to keep the engine as simple as possible so as to be fixable and reliable in the bush and therefore want to stay away from fuel injection, oxygen sensors etc.

For the tranny, I have been told that if I get a 5 speed with transfer case from a mid 80s S10, it would be a pretty solid Borg Warner seutp.

The start of this project is probably at least a year away but I want to do as much homework as I can first.

Has anyone done this and or have any advice?

I have not...there is an area on this site for swaps like this, search through it. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f89/

I'd say search the internet. Search here. Search Pirate4x4. Just don't post over there until you've done your searching, they don't humor people who ask questions that have been answered already.

Good luck! Post some photos for us.

Hi Zach:

Thank you very much for pointing me in these directions and for the advice. Photos to come probably upon starting the project.

sure you want to go that way ? .. I think going a small block V8 is a better choice .. all the same mounting and trany options .. cheeper to "accessorise" and out of the box way more HP !!!!! only issue is weight differance which in my opinion - HP outweighs the weight issue

yea so like a 150-170hp v6..or if ya get the right V8...could be lookin at close to 300hp..

big difference..

if i ever went with a V8 it would probably be either a 1UZ lexus..or a Ford 289 out of the early 60's mustangs..drove a '65 stang with a stock 289 that had been rebuilt..it was a beast hahahaha

I need some more power to haul my hunting gear into the bush and then haul it and the game back out. I am concerned about fuel usage because some of the locations are 4 hrs from fuel and, as you know, space is very limited.
