Quick tune up question.

Hey all,

So because I do not know exactly when the plugs, wires cap rotor were ever done or what not, I was thinking of doing those things.

what do you guys recommend I buy? oem? or like napa or autozone pep boys etc etc????
I assume ngk is a good brand for the 1st gens? part numbers would be great, thanks in advance!!!

Sometimes the replacement wires from Napa, Autozone, etc. aren't the same OEM size so make sure you get the mm correct or check out the "make your own" accel wire kit.

I went with Toyota parts for my truck. A bit pricey but I think it's worth it.

Napas Echlin/Beldin line of parts are great quality, I've never had a problem with them.
plugs- ngk 7082
cap- ECH EP671
rotor- ECH EP 764
Wires- BEL 700293
Napa also makes a "Milage plus" line thats much cheaper but no where near the quality of parts

If not going back with toyota parts I would personally go with the following:

Napa Echlin- cap/rotor
Borg Warner- wires
NGK- plugs

You really don't need to gap plugs these days, they all come pre-gapped for your truck. I can find the spec's tonight though if you really want them and nobody has them on the top of their head.

definately stay with NGK for the plugs . . . DO NOT use bosch

My personal preference for the cap is Toyota Genuine, for wires I went with MSD (but only cause I found a set for cheap on ebay)

So I wonder what the dealer will get me for cap, rotor, plugwires?

How do you guys feel about seafoam in the carb, the stall out method of pouring it into the carb slow till it stalls and waiting 15 min?

Did it once to a old chevy I had and the smoke was unreal.

I have used a little in the oil and gas tank but not carb.

If you get NGK platinum plugs they will be pre gapped for your truck. At least mine were.

. . . just wait until one goes open circuit and stops firing for you, or better yet, just stops firing sometimes. I've had repeated, terrible experiences with them and when I was a auto tech fixed many rough idles by tossing the bosch crap in the trash can. Maybe it's just me though . . .

In my personal experience bosch works well with Mercedes, BMW, VW......the European cars. It is just figuring out what to use for each make. For chevy I use ACdelco, for Ford I use Motorcraft, for Chrysler I use Champion, for Toyota and Honda and Nissian (if not using factory parts) I use NGK. This has just come over a long time of trial and error and seeing what customers have brought in. I cant tell you how many times someone will bring their car in and it "still misses even after I changed plugs, wires, yada yada yada" and it turns out the plugs they put in were not working well for that particular car. Once again this is jut my experience, take it with a grain of salt if you want.

OK all, I picked up some new plugs, NGK platnium 7082's.

I have not even looked what are in there now, but did see the wires were called "Sumitomo" or something like that? ever heard of them? decent or no?

Sould I buy some sort of anti seize and dab the threads before install or no?

thanks.

EDIT. haha I did some searching and see sumitomo is stock for the toyotas. NICE. the p.o did say they went to the dealer for all services on the truck! well, maybe I will just leave the wires alone, I swear they said sumitomo 1981 on them? but it was dark so I cant be sure.
If it has those wires, how do you know when they need replacing? what would a toyota dealer run for plugs, still gotta look at those.

just a bit on antiseize on the spark plug threads and a light coating of di-electric grease on the ceramic insulator (or inside the s-plug boot)

to figure out when wires need replacing: start vehicle and let it warm up to normal operating temp, take a water bottle with spray nozzle and lightly spray the length of your wires - if they need replacing you will either see a light show (arcing) or the truck will start misfiring alot worse. -- since you live in Minnesota, you might want to wait for semi warm day or do this inside with hose over the tailpipe going outside (so you don't asphixiate)
