Pre 84 backspacing on wheels
Hey everyone, as I’ve mentioned in other threads, I picked up an 81 4x4 short bed with factory steering (no high-steer etc). I have a set of later Toyota wheels that don’t fit the 81 due to backspacing, rubbing the tie rods. So, what is the factory backspacing on an 81 4x4? What are the limits on backspace? What are you running? I’ve contemplated wheel spacers, but A) I’m not entirely sure how thick to go, and B) I’m not thrilled about doing so. Thanks

Hello!
If we assume that the backspacing is the same on an 81 as an 83, I measured the stock SR5 wheels from my 83 at approximately 3 3/8". I've heard others mention 3 1/2" for stock.
I recently switched over to some 8" wide rims with an advertised 3 3/4" back spacing ( https://www.summitracing.com/parts/usw-94-5860 ) and they fit great on my truck. I have a 2" suspension lift and 33x10.5 BFG K02s and there is no rubbing whatsoever. I imagine they would work fine with no lift also.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Sam

81 backspacing
Hey Sam, yes, that helped. I found a setup that is working and the 3.75” backspacing fit without issue. Good to get those 1980 retreads off of her and safely drive.
