Overcarbed??

Ok, I have another question about my '83 22r. It is mostly stock (which is why I liked it), but the guy I bought it from had made a few mods: weber 38, headers, but beyond this the engine is pretty much stock. The problem is, from the time I bought it, it has trouble starting when cold. It runs great, but when I get in it after it has been sitting a few hours I have to crank it a few times and pump the gas to get it to start. Also, I usually have to rev the engine a couple times to get to idle ok . After that, it is fine.
I have heard that the Weber 38 is best when the engine has been modified quite extensively. Could this be the source of my cold start problems? If so, is there any quick fixes to help start up? Since this is a new carb I don't want to replace it (also don't have the $$ to further modify engine at this time).
Thanks,

JB

Look into the Idle Jets on it. Remember the 38 has 2 idle jets and make them both the same size. Im running 50's and about 3/4 turn out on both mixture screws and starts fine anytime. Also take a look at your plugs and read them... tells you everything you need to know about your engine.

I have adjusted my mixture screws to where the idle sounded better. But it didn't really affect startup. I have looked at the plugs and they look good. The PO replaced them (along with the wires about a year ago). I got my head back from the shop all cleaned up and with a valve job. I am hoping that since some of the gunk has been removed from the engine that once I put it back together it'll run/start a little better? We'll see....

I know when I called to talk to LC Engineering about weber carbs, the guy there said it is best in cold climates to use the stock air filter assembly, not the weber air filter. I assumed for insulation, maybe against carb ice, starting issues wouldn't make since to me though. My stock carb has a not working so well choke, I think it stays too closed/ does not open soon enough, so I have starting problems in the cold from being too rich, so I guess that weber could be a little too much, but I would elimate the other possiblities first although. Make sure the choke is working fine.

I'm apologize, I guess I needed to clarify. By "cold", I was referring to engine temp, not air temperature. Unfortunately, it is plenty warm here in AR right now. I did check the choke; it seemed to be functioning properly.

a 38/38 is a lot a carb for a stock 22R! the main reason being, My32/36DGAV is progressive, meaning on e barrell opens first then the other as a secondary. on a 38/38, both open and close at the same time. but even my 32/36 started doing this recently. i have a feeling it has to do with the power valve/ accellerator pump. i bought a rebuild kit for about $30
