whats better then taking your time to do it right??

doing it again!!!

somehow the timing chain moved and is now caught between the outside of the chain guide and the crankshaft sprocket. i have no idea how it moved like that, but now i'll be pulling the timing cover off again, scraping the gaskets and silicone sealant off, buying new gaskets, fixing the chain and putting it all back together.

at least its clean.

bringing this old post back from the dead!! hard to believe it was 2 years ago this whole mess started. well, a lot has changed since then, eliminated some stress of a crazy job and a crazy wife... amazing how that makes time for the other things again!

well, since last update... i decided to pull the block after the timing chain got hung up in the timing case. that way i could clean the block and the rest of the engine compartment of all the ridiculous amounts of oil. and i know you all love pictures so much, so here you go!

engine block out!

block on the stand

open engine bay, look at all that oil and grime!

because fixing oil leaks is overrated, it leaves this kind of mess!

degreased and power washed, and about 20 lbs lighter.

and i didn't realize the fenders were blue until now.

fast forward a while... cleaned the bare block, then finally got the timing cover reinstalled without the chain hannging, and head installed.

then i put the intake/carb assembly back on the head so i wouldn't have to do it in the truck.

exhaust manifold installed

tada!! it looks like an engine again!

here comes the fun part.

flywheel and clutch installed

dropping the bad boy in. (i found out quickly the fan had to be pulled to drop the engine in)

at home, at last!

getting everything hooked back up as best as i could remember...

then... you have that moment of truth. did i tighten every bolt? did i forget a part? is something backwards? did a leave a tool in there?

so with a little starting fluid she gets her first crank.

then a little gas down the carb....

ITS ALIVE!! i'm a little surprised i did it.

at first, just a leak from the heater hose behind the valve cover. tightened that down and it held for a while, but i think the fitting is too mangled, so i'll have to address that issue.

and after a few hours of running.... my oil pump is leaking. bad.

but so far, everything else is holding.

the clutch slave cylinder blew out while i was installing the engine, so i got that swapped out yesterday and took her for a ride down the drive. i got a thumbs up from the neighbor. it felt pretty damn good!

still lots left to do... figure out a few misc vacuum lines, fix the oil pump and heater hose leak, then get the timing dialed in right.
