New to the yota
hi guy! I just bought my first toyota
It's an 83 2x4 22r
It's got a small body lift and sits on 235/75/15s
I was wondering what I could do for small hp gains...
I know it's a 4 banger, but still
Thanks!!
Also how does it respond to a cold air intake?

Typical easy stuff that most people can do with no problem:
-Weber 32/36
-Plugs (don't have to be anything fancy, sometime the plugs are just worn out)
-Wires (spend the little bit extra and get decent wires)
-Distributor (worn distributor caps and rotors can misfire and/or give weak spark)
-Exhaust (2-2.25" is ideal, no cat and a free-flowing muffler)
-Headers (Cheap headers are a waste of money, you get what you pay for - go with Thorley, Rock Ripper or LCE)
More advanced stuff would include: ignition, coil, cam shaft, valves, port/polished intake, lower end rebuild, etc.
It's a controversial issue as to whether or not it actually increases HP, but I have found decent gains in desmogging 22R engines (see the link to the tutorial in my signature). As long as you don't have emissions in your area, It's reletively easy and cheap to do.
Bottom line, you're not going to suck a whole lot of power out of these engines with a few bolt-ons. You'd be lucky to gain 15HP with a bunch of stuff any that doesn't require tearing into the engine. I rebuilt my engine from the bottom up (see my engine building thread) and I'll be lucky to see something around 130 HP.

Yeah like Dave mentioned, the first thing to do is make sure it's actually running correctly. Around town anyways, I think these things are actually pretty peppy when they're tuned right.
Full tune up: plugs, wires, distributer cap & rotor, adjust timing, adjust valves, tune carb, check PCV, fuel filter, oil change, air filter.

loose some weight
...... no , but seriously .. clean all the crap out of it that has been collected over the years .. wash out the boxed frame , and wash all the grime off .
it wont add HP , but carrying the extra weight will rob any advances in HP you could potentially recognise with kawazx636's post above
.
