New Here!

NO TRUCK (yet)
looking for a 1st gen pickup that needs a little more than some TLC
don't mind rebuilding a 20R, or even rebuilding a 5 speed transmission
We have needed a truck for too long. It's gotten to the point where we just look at each other and we don't say it anymore.
Full-sized trucks ruled out. Don't need to do any heavy hauls.
I weld, cast aluminum, and have some precision machining training.
I have a 1989 Ford C-6 if onayone needs something for a hauler, has 5000 miles (or less) on a rebuild.
Also have a Mercedes 617.952 for any projects.
On a low budget right now, but things are looking up!
Currently have and Aisin carb (38151) sitting in solvent. I can't believe I got this far without rebuilding a carburetor! My brother did, my dad did when he owned a gas station.
I choose Toyota because all I ever heard about them has been good. Unless the owner overdid something....

Cheers!

Stan

I didn't know this was a sell your stuff board! (joking)

Seriously though, I can't say enough about the 82 Hilux if you can find one in acceptable condition. Reason being it comes with the bomb proof 22R engine, and that was the last year it was made with a double row timing chain, which typically never needs replacing or adjusting. They're a gem if you can find one.

20r also has double row chains, smoother flowing heads and can be bored out to same displacement as a 22r. But im a little biased..
Theyre both great motors, especially if you do your own work on them.

If you can find an old school toyota in the right price range, theyre worth it. Check CL frquently. Ive seen some deals pop up and be gone the same day.

Check the frame for rust.
Good luck on the search

True, but I was stating the last model year double row chains were available, because we all know, the older the truck, the more risk of rust. I was lucky enough to find one with minor surface rust on the frame. It had a little over 240,000 miles on it, but you'd never know by looking at it.

Yea, I think the body and frame condition are the biggest factors.
the motor can be a crap shoot anyways depending on how the previous owner took care of it, but you can still find parts for them. Frames are hard to find.
personally, 79 to 2000s, Id take any 4x4 toyota. Not a big fan of the 3vz but some people do like it.

Thanks for the replies

Thanks for the comments!

Tearing apart the carburetor I damaged a seal on the hot idle compensator. Seems to me this is fairly important otherwise it wouldn't have been added. Perhaps a problem for some as I read that there are occasional idle related issues. ACC'ed the rubber part back together, doesn't look like it has much movement.
Certainly do want to build a 20R for the truck as time and technology seem to have gotten engines a touch "over-fangled".
The search continues!

Later

Keep in mind a common problem with with old 22Rs is the fuel cut off solenoid can eventually go out. The symptoms usually start as it won't hold idle at a stop, and can progress to extensive lurching, even when fully warmed up and running at freeway speed. The part is no longer made, but they can be bypassed easily by any shop that knows these carbs well. I had it done on mine and no problem since. Trust me, you don't want excessive lurching on the freeway like I had, very scary.
