New Guy

Hey everyone. I just joined and i had a question for you guys. I'm looking at getting a 1980 yota and was just wondering if there were any differences in the smog parts between California and Arizona trucks? The truck im interested in is from Arizona (still has Arizona plates) and I live in california so I was wondering if I'm going to run into any problems with smogging the truck.

California has probably the most strict emissions regulations in the country. Does Arizona have emissions testing?

I'll let the California people tell you more, but it's been a very large hassle for a lot of people trying to smog these trucks on the west coast.

At what point are vehicles old enough that they don't need to pass smog in Cali? Or do they ever get old enough?

Mortal,
I bought an '83 from a guy here in Cali that purchased it in Washington. For whatever reason he never registered it before selling it to me, but I had no problem getting it smogged and registered in my name. The guy I bought it from smogged it for me, and I learned that as long as it had all the federally required smog equipment and met California emissions standards I was good to go. Hope that helps.

Ok thanks guys I think I'll give a smog shop a call and ask them and I'll also take the truck down to a smog shop to see if it will pass smog.

Ok just got off the phone with my toyota dealership and there were 2 different trucks made during the 1980 model year a california truck and a truck for the rest of the country. The main difference is the smog parts. However the guy from the dealership said I will have no problem smogging the truck as long as it has all of the nationally required smog parts. That being said I also got off the phone with the guy thats selling the truck and its been garaged the last 7 years has 200000 miles on it and was driven by a old man since new. I'm going to check it out later today and if the truck is as clean as i think it should be I'll be buying it sometime this week. I'll also get some pics of it and post them up later.

As long as all the parts are there and hooked up you should be good to go. If the truck has been sitting for seven years check out all of the vacuum lines and make sure there not bad. Give it a complete tune up and replace the fuel filter. You should be all set after that.

It's likely going to be a cool truck, so I won't scare you away, but this is a big if! Those old vacuum and emissions valves get plugged up, removed, broken, etc. And I haven't found a source for replacing them, yet. Best bet is always just to remove all that stuff. But then of course it won't pass smog. I have sympathy for Californians. I've seen a couple horror stories on this site or maybe Marlin Crawler of people trying to get these trucks to pass smog in Cali, but considering how many of them there are out there, it must be a pretty small portion of them with a lot of issues.

I'm definitely happy to be in a no-inspection/no-emissions state!

Let us know how it all goes!
