(1979 20R) I bought a new fuel pump because I wasn't getting any fuel when I cranked the engine. I installed it, and I can make the motor run with carb cleaner in the carb, but I'm still not getting fuel out of the line. No, the filter isn't clogged. What gives?

Pull the valve cover and check the cam that is supposed to activate the pump, make sure it is not completely worn or broken.

There is a filter in the tank as well that can get alot of crud built up around the filter that can keep it from flowing. Are you able to get fuel out of the line with a vacuum pump or by siphoning it? If you are getting fuel flow, from the line, it will be the pump causing problems. I lifted the valve cover on mine as was actually able to see the cam pumping the mechanical pump.

Otherwise, start seeing if the fuel lines are clogged. These tanks and lines get nasty.

be sure you have the "spacer" in there , new pump will come with 2 gaskets , but most wont have the Bakelite spacer ..

Sorry, I should have said it's an electric fuel pump. I dropped the gas tank in order to put it in. So it's a new filter in there. The truck only has like 7 fuses total, with one fuse for 'engine'. None of the fuses are blown.

Are you sure the lines are not restricted somewhere? Do you actually hear it run or not?

I can't hear it, I'm not sure if that's because it's super quiet, or not working. I don't have a vacuum pump to see if the lines are clogged, unfortunately

well, first step first...you need to know if the fuel pump is working. If you are near it or you can touch it you can be certain if it works or not even if it's quiet. I can hear my holley pump from inside the house windows closed when my truck is idling in the garage haha.

The next diagnosis really depends if the pump is functioning or not.

You're right, but it is brand new. I guess there's a chance it was a crap pump right out of the box, but I really don't want to drop the gas tank again just to learn that it works fine.
Are there relays or fusible links that I can check first?

I'm not talking about removing the pump, more like check if you have power to the pump, are the connections or wires corroded, stiff, broken, can you use a multimeter? Check for grounds if they are good. But all that is useless to check if the pump is fuctioning when you try to start it, can you hear it when you are close by while someone else turns the key on or when you crank?

I can't hear it. Is there a relay, or a fusible link I can check? The fuses aren't blown

Not sure about that, download the fsm (check the sticky on the top of the page) and check the wiring diagram, that will help you locate the relay or the fusible link if there is one.

I dont know the 20r, and have never seen one. I could be wrong, but the next generation came with mechanical pumps, so I cant see Toyota going backwards in technology. If I am correct on that, someone added the electric pump to it and it is anybodys guess as to where they tapped into the electric at.

I did google some 20r pictures and seen the mechanical pump on it. With the 22r, there is no electric involved into the fuel supply system. I would suggest correcting the pickup tube if the PO messed it up and add the mechanical pump back to it making sure to use the rubber spacer that Slacker mentioned earlier if it was me.

I just replaced a mechanical pump on a 22r and it is just the fuel lines, pump and an oblong dish that attaches to the front of the camshaft for the fuel system on these.

Electric pumps came factory on some 20r equiped vehicles, not sure if it is 79 only but I know my 20r head (unknown year) doesn't have the port for the mecanical fuel pump.

when i bought my 79 it had a ele fuel pump problem i added mechanical pump had to get themastat housing off a 80 =rockauto= couldnt get it to work right put ele back on and ran new wire with switch under dash for antitheft also cut a hatch cover in bed to make removal /instalation way easyier. some one put in differant seat and cut wire almost all the way if u cant hear pump its not working ymmv
