low range shifting problem 79 4x4

i have a 79 4x4 pick up, when ever i use low 4x4 in 1st gear and try to shift into 2nd gear in low it kicks the transfer case into neutral, the 2 shifters are contacting each other. do all these old trucks do this?is there a way to fix this problem, perhaps a kit that has different angle shifters or some thing?

i allready put new bushings in the shifter to toghten it up a bit thinking that was cousing it but its still kicking it out

i bet your tcase shifter is in backwards, or like wabbit said a body lift will make your boot push and pull on each other due to a longer shifter throw

If you have an L43 4 speed side shifter, it is usually kind of sloppy. I used one for about a year. Ended up dog legging a TC lever to avoid a similar issue.
Edit- here is a pic to give you an idea of what I did. Used it with my 5 speed too till I found another lever:

might need to shorten the dog leg a little bit, but this will work for now...thought it might hit my leg while driving but a trip around down it seems fine.
