L52 Shift Lever removal
OK, my stupid 10 minute job to replace my worn shift bushing (ordered 1.5 years ago and finally found it stashed in a tool box drawer) is turning in a 
job.
been letting it soak for awhile:
Manual says to use SST 09305-20012 that looks like you apply pressure downward and turn counter clockwise at the same time to remove a kind of dome shaped retainer to remove the shift lever:
I don't have one of these handy doodads...I have tried tapping it down with a punch lightly with a hammer.
anybody got an alternate method that will prevent me from hammering and destroying this thing?
I though about removing the shift lever retainer housing (4 bolts from underneath) but am not sure if that will cause further issues...

We just use our fingers at work, and it seems to work ok. MOST of the time.
However, we do run into problematic retainters on occasion at work, and usually a couple of screw drivers works just fine. You need to press down, and turn counter clock wise about 20 degrees or so, then the retainer will pop up above the housing, and the shifter will pop out.

OK, ancient thread but i thought i would update this thing with what I made a month or so after posting this thread
Poor Man's shift lever retainer removal tool:
here is a pic out of the manual that shows the SST:
since i had the idea of using an old socket or some tubing I thought I would give it a shot. 6 minutes with the grinder I had this:
1" square tubing, notched and bent in slightly to fit in the shifter retainer
slip it over the shift lever
use your tool of choice, push down and turn to the left about a 1/4 turn
