l have a confession to make...

l drive my 83 SR5 with straight pipe exhaust. Due to my muffler being rusted inside-out and about to fall off. l had to cut it off. Ha ha. But l noticed my truck having more power and revs much quicker now. And it's not due to the loud noise deceiving me thinking it has crazy power. lt almost sounds like a rock crawler with the 22R since it's carbureted. Has an one else had this kinda fun yet?

I have heard its bad on internal parts because the motors need some back pressure but other than that I dont know.

as long as you have enough pipe to provide the back pressure you should see faster revving and a little improved hp but you might lose some tq due to less back pressure.

The last 2 days! One of my exhaust bolts broke that holds the rear of the exhaust to my gutted cat while wheeling. I got lots of looks on the 40 miles back home... Just buttoned er back up today tho. I did notice a slight power increase, and a mpg decrease.....about 21 to 17...

l researched it too and less back pressure can't hurt the motor. The exhaust manifold produces enough to let the motor run right.

no back pressure can actually make you loose power. i know when i changed from just a cherry bomb to a full system (cat and muffler. thanks nc inspection) i could tell a low range difference. i feel i gained a little low end torque. now if you happen to drive a 90's ford ranger and you hack the exhaust off thats proven to give you 50 extra ponies.

4 Strokes dont need backpressure, it's exhaust velocity.
And he won't lose exhaust velocity unless he changes the size of his exhaust..
