Iratic idle on a 79 pickup engine
Hello yotatech,
First off I love this site. It has helped me so much in the past. I have recently inherited a 79 dolphin RV. It is pretty awes ome, 59000 original miles. But it has been parked in the Oregon rainforest for about 7 years so it has some issues.
I returned to Oregon to try to get her pack up and running recently. There is quite a story associated with this beautiful vehicle. I will spare you, unless prompted.
I did some basic work on the truck, it starts up great and will idle right around 800-900. The temp and gas gauge don't
work (yet) but it seems to run at normal temp. Once it gets up to temp the truck will start to run fine. But if I drive it around the block, and come to a stop, it will start to idle at 400 and surge up to 1200 rpm. If I turn the truck off, and restart it, it will idle at 900 or so again.
I'm not sure what's going on. Can't find anything online about this. Please help.
The important part:
All new fluids
New battery
Checked and cleaned all grounds/connections
New ignition coil
New distributor cap
New new spark plugs
New wires
Getting good spark
New fuel filter
Fuel pump is functioning
Rebuilt carburetor
New vacuum lines
Resurfaced exhaust manifold
Checked PVC valve
New manifold gasket
Checked timing
any ideas? What should I do next? Thanks for any help.

Well if it was a 22re I would tell you to lower the idle speed back to spec (650-750 from memory) because the brake booster activation brings up the rpms to trigger the idle speed cut off.
But I'm not 100% certain what the equivalent is on the carburetor linkage..
