Inconsistent running 20r

Hey everyone, got a 1980 toyota pickup with the 20r and 2wd. After some work on it it was running great for a while but as the title says now it's very inconsistent when it runs. As of now, I can start it and then it will seem to run fine for a few minutes at an idle, but if I were to push the rpm up some it runs great... for about 20 seconds. Then it backfires a few times and dies, then I have trouble starting it unless I let it rest for a few minutes, then it usually starts up again and does the same thing. I'm no expert when talking about trucks but I'm stumped. I've replaced all spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributer cap, rotor, coil wire and the ignition coil itself. Still have the same problem. My buddy (who's way more technical than I am) says it could be out of time but I wouldn't think so considering that it seems to run fine until it gets to the point when it dies. Hoping some real yota experts have some suggestions, thanks!

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. When it dies, check the fuel level in the sight glass on the carb (facing forward, roughly nickel-sized glass window).
