the 22re and the 22r are identical engines one just has a carb, the other has fuel injection gear.
If you want to stay with 22r you can buy a 22re and attach the manifold/carb from a 22r. Given the age of your truck I would advise a pre 85.5 22r as already mentioned, as after 1985 toyota changed the head to block geometry and the stud pattern for the exhaust manifold. But if you need to use a newer engine, your existing intake/fuel delivery parts should still work for you, you'd just need a new exhaust header or manifold.
Since you have a 20r, you might consider looking into the 22r/20r hybrid. Basically it's a 22r lower combined with the 20r head. I'm not well researched in the matter but I think the reasoning is the 20r head allows better flow and squeezes more HP out. The key is you need a pre-85.5 22r to make it work.

Well I found a 82 22r I plan on buying. I know it will probably need to be rebuilt I will probably pick it up this week. I have been toying around with the idea of putting my 20r head on the 22r block but I have seen such mixed reviews with it. If I did the head would be completely stock. I dont have a bunch of money to throw at it. I haven't really read about anyone just putting at stock 20r head on a 22r block. They usally put bigger valves in or something. These trucks are like crack once you start working on them you cant stop. Thanks for all of the input. I love this forum it makes working on these trucks a lot eaiser for bone heads like me.

Love the idea of the 20R/22R hybrid! As far as I know, you are able to just bolt on the 20R head and go! You have to use the 20R intake, but the 22R exhaust manifold will bolt on just fine!
Oh, and if you do a hybrid, make sure you put on of these on your valve cover!

I thought the distributor was the same as far as the wiring i plan getting the FSM for an 82 so that should help out quite a bit. These manuals are written a lot like the ones i use to use when i was a blackhawk helicopter mechanic and are really easy to fillow. I am sure i will be burning up this forum when it comes time to put it in. I am just going to take my time. I will oull my trans. And transfer case at the same time and clean them up. The big problem is i live on post at Fort Riley K.S. and every time i work on my cars i get a nasty gram saying they will kick me off post. Which is in sane because i pay over $1500.00 a month for a crappy house with a one car garage.

The distributor on the older models (or maybe it's the carb one) was vacuum advance, on the efi models the distributor is electronic advance. Subtle but important difference.

Thank for letting me know about the engine management accessories. I thought it was pretty much a direct swap becuase it was out of a 1982. I will make sure I grab the computer and coil. I am going to try and get everything I see.
