I think i have a problem
Every time i start my truck it runs like crapola it sounds like it runs on 2 or 3 cylinders then after a minute or so it starts to run fine. It will die if i dont give it some gas when its running badly. I also noticed oil or something spraying out of the exhaust. If i hold a rag up to the tail pipe it will get a bunch of black spots on it. I am pretty new at working on cars and i hope its nothing major. I did a compression test and the first 2 cylinders were 110in and the last 2part were 90psi. I have a feeling you guys are going to say i have to rebuild it but I thought I would get some input anyways. Its a 20r and i have no idea how many miles are on it damm 5that digit odometer. Thanks

those are real low compression numbers
Sounds like your oil rings are cracked or failing, and compression rings are gone. probably a couple hundred dollar job considering the gaskets and if you find any other trouble.

Rebuild
Well I guess I better look for a 22r the so i can have a little bit more power.
perfect for you to learn "how to" .. think positive !!
pick yourself up a "builder" engine .. do lots of reading .. (we'll help ya here) , and build yourself an engine . You should be able to find a good builder for VERY cheep or free .. I myself tossed 4 away this year cuz after hanging onto them for years , I couldnt even give them away . |
I think that you should install a 6BT twin turbo cummins w/a power output of 1000+ HP. Don't worry your toyota drivertran will hold up to it.
I have been looking for a engine to build but they cost around $300it around here
How much do you think i should pay for a 22r out of a truck in the junk yard also what years can i use un my truck. Its a 8020r with a 4 speed.
I found a 86 22r and was wondering if i could use that year for my truck
What year is your truck? It will bolt right in place, but the wiring and stuff could get difficult if it's a different year truck.
Its a 1980
You will need to get a computer for the engine and there will be a ˟˟˟˟load of wiring to do at the very least.

But if it's from a 1986 toyota then it's probably a 22RE.

Carbs were in 4wd truck until '88 (last year) and '92 in 2wds.(U.S. market) IMO, the OP should swap in a 22RE. more power, better mpg and would be killer in a 1st gen 4wd. |
I would love to do a 22re swap but i probably dont have the skill for that. I need to get a 22r and rebuild it so i can learn how to work on my truck. I plan keeping it for a while.
