Just looking at the pics and noticed your 81 has round headlights. ??? My 81 has square lights. Is this correct or did Toyota do a change in mid year??

My '81 also has round head lights. Not sure if they did a change mid year, maybe someone else knows otherwise. To the best of my understand round headlight were 79-81, 82-83 were square. One possible explaination is that your truck may be been in an accident and someone found 82-83 front end parts to use, not the only one just a theory...

real nice & clean truck, there is one down here from the 79/80 years, only problem is the motor is in bad shape, i might still go for it, but im not sure whatto do with the motor? buy a turbo 22RE from the late 80's pick-ups/4runners or stick one of Toyota's diesel motors from the 70s in there. someone down here owns an early 70s toyota diesel hilux, amazing shape, i shouldask him if he would sell his...

For what its worth, I guess I was going on this info copied from 4x4 wire under Toyota Time line."1981 saw the first major changes in the Hilux model. A 2.4L 22R motor replaced the previous 20R and could be found connected to a L45 4-speed or a L50 5-speed. Both transmissions contained "top" shifters for the RF1A 21 spline gear driven transfer case. The standard gear ratio used in 1981 was 3.90 and the front end received a new grill and square headlights in place of the previous round lights. 1981 saw the introduction of Trekkers made by Winnebago and Trailblazers by Griffith. These were the predecessors to the 4Runner."
I don't know if the trucks they are referring to pertain to U.S. models or all
truck models. What do you guys think? Fred
