how to remove rhino liner?

so i plan on buying this 83 Sr5 (well i think is sr5?) and another thing it has special edition bagdes on the fender but anyways, the whole truck has been rhino lined. Personally i dont like the look of the whole entire truck being rhinolined, i would like to remove it and paint the truck, and adding factory decals back on it, does anyone have any experience in removing this stuff??? but heres some pics of truck..

The rhino liner looks good. The rear bumper, front bumper and the (side step), not so good looking.

If it was prepped correctly and applied professionally.......buy another truck. Really I don't see how you could get it off without destroying the panels.

So is it rhino or a cheap roll on out of a can, huge difference. I worked at rhino and I have dealt with a lot of Line-x stuff. If it is the roll on mayby a light grind and some filler after to smooth it out. I know that when I worked at rhino we had a customer that was not happy with the job and wanted it removed, the owner bought a new bed from the dealer factory matched and paid the dealer to replace it, but it sounds like its a roll on type.

yeah aircraft stripper or the heat and peel method would work. but either way its going to be a royal pain in the a$$. but yeah painting over it.. not such good idea. if i were you id be thinking of moving on and finding another truck or just leaving the bedliner on it.
good luck!

Looks like a DIY herculiner IMO, coverage is lack luster . Close up of these 'special edition badges?
Edit if it was rolled on with little prep than some time with a stack of flapper disks and a weekend will get rid of it..

I would be more worried about getting rid of those turdbird tires...not one of Interco's better products.

It makes a huge difference on what brand it is. Any sort of a decent brand and chances are a stripper won't touch it. If its gooey at all it will clog up grinding discs in about 2 seconds so you don't want to do that. Our liner will grind off but only if we use a 24 grit disc and at a low speed. Anything finer than that and it clogs in no time. If its actually a decent boxliner, if you can find an edge it will peel. Heat works well to seperate it from the panel. If you grind off all of it, you'll end up heating up the panels too much and it will warp and will look terrible after its painted without a whole bunch of GOOD bodywork. An average Joe doesn't want to try and fix a heat warped panal as a first attempt at body work.

We've painted over boxliner plenty of times in my bodyshop. It looks really good. Keep in mind we put on quality paint and do it right. Anything will look terrible if a spray can is used.

I own a spray line business, we remove the cheap (roll on) stuff and re-shoot the truck beds for the dealerships i take care of. If it is a Rhino, linex, etc etc (quality) bed liner re just shoot over it.

way back when, I spent WAY TOO MUCH on having stuff linexed on my truck. It from an acutal linex shop that does all our local dealership stuff. I pulled some off of my front bumper to put on some light tabs, It took a hammer and a chisel to get the patches of linex off where I needed to weld.

When I put my sliders on, we welded the plate re-infocement to the end of the slider tube, the linex was shot about 8" away from the end of the tube where we were welding, the linex got hot enought that it start to peel around the edges.

Now all my junk was sandblasted and primered correctly, thus why it took a chisel to get the linex off with out heat. But if you heat it slow (don't melt it) with a hand torch or heat gun, and just pull stips of it off while your heating, it should come off with some work. Use a utility knife to cut the stips before you heat it, and it will make it a little easier.

This may only work with the actual linex or Rhino lining, or some DIY stuff that is layed down pretty thick, If it is thin and not textured, you may be in for alot of sanding and peeling...
