Well, after a year of calling with no answer its in my garage! Now the good. I can track the history, I, or if I sell it before I sign the title will be the 4th owner! Ive known the wife of the 2nd owner for a LOONG time!!!! The owner did jack the price on me once he got there, I was there about an hour before he showed up and did my homework, I was under, on and under the hood of the beast for a while. The front fenders are rusted at the corners, the drivers side front bumper / rocker is tweaked and there are small holes in the floor but nothing major at all... The intereor needs work, the back seat looks good, the front seats have been covered but are cracked up, as is the dash, the drivers side door panel is trashed, he said that somone tried to steal the speakers and only ripped out the drivers side, they were at the time nice Pioneer 6.5". The rear fiberlass does have a crack about 10" from the right tail light below the hatch, but thats 100% repairable. Its really never been off road and Matty the 2nd owner bought it back in the late 90s. The truck has not been molesed at all! Its only ever had stock size tires on it, its has a matching set of Coninetal AP's that have great tread but are shot because of just sitting around, they are really out of balance or have flat spots! Uner the hood it looks 100% original!!! The lights and wipers all work, the wiper motor pumps good etc. The interor may clean up, I wont know until I get a chance to really tear into it, the good thing is its in MY garage
. The guy I bought it from handed me a reciept from 2006, when he had a new exhaust system, new manifold, plug wires, cap, rotor etc done to it for almost $700 and told me that he was only willing to take $800 for it. I grumbled a bit but paid him since it ran OK and I had been waiting for a year to buy it! The top end sounds a little noisy to me, but it does have 170,000 miles on the clock. Its got the SR5 cluster with a tac, down low it has the oil pressure / volt guage but no sun roof or sliding rear windows. It was built 5/1982 so its not the 81 that I was told it was but Im OK with that because it has a 5 speed gear box. I drove it home about 30 miles hitting speeds of 50ish, the brakes, lights, clutch, heat and gear box were good to go! It does need an oil change, which might quiet the top end, I did check the oil and added a quart before I started it, along with adding some anitfreeze to the radiator. I gave it a once over tonight with a flashlight, the "free mustache ride" sticker and the rest are history!! All 5 wheels match and it definitaly looks like its never been wrecked with the exception of the drivers side front left corner where it bumped something down low. It drives good and strait, shifts fine and actually got me a thumbs up from a guy on the way home!!!!!!! I was a little irritated to have to cough up 300 more than I was told but knowing the history, having some documentation to prove it and the fact that it runs pretty good for a 28 year old truck I said why not!! Here is a link to some 1st day pictures, mind you its not been cleaned, has been parked for over 6 months "so he said" I think its been sitting longer but who knows. Ill take more once I get it cleaned up!!!

I agree! A year later
Its in good shape for its age, you can tell by looking under the hood that the original owner took great care of it, Im going to call Jenn tomorrow to see if I can get some info from her husband Matt, I know he bought it after his 4 runner was totaled. Its never been molested, has what looks like the stock rear shocks, the fronts are Gaibriel somethings... The clutch needs bled, it dosnt have much pedal but works. Im going to flush the radiaor and cooling system, change the oil, gear lube and bleed the brakes before I really drive it again. I did add 5 gallons of "93" gas to it with some carb cleaner, the gas guage went up from a little above the E to the half way point so I think it works OK. The parking brake doesnt work but the light does, the throttle sticks a little, it likes to idle about 2k unless you pull back on the pedal with your toe, nothing some lube or a new cable wont fix but I think for $800 cash it was worth it. The 4 wheel drive works great, I turned off the back road onto an old gravel quarry road that leads back to my house, got out and locked the hubs in and it pulls like a freight train!!! Any suggestions of areas to focus on would be great, Ive only really got experiance with my 1988 and a 91 twd so bring on the suggestions! Im going to try to make it out to a local bone yard that has at least 2 1st gen trucks and see if I can snag some odds and ends, I did find the drivers side bumper end in the back but it needs a drivers side door panel, its trashed, the center console / arm rest cover is as of now MIA, its odd that I cant find the recline / tilt levers for the front seats, I dont know if there is even one, which would make it hard to get into the back seat but they are the stock seats! Its on the battery charger now, an oil filter, oil and antifreeze are all on my Autozone hit list for tomorrow.. Any suggestions on lube for the transfer case, diffs and trans would be appreciated! ~Matt

Thanks!
I think the outside will definitely clean up, the front fenders need to come off, they are both rusted out at the bottoms down low behind the wheels, probably full of crap behind the fender liners, Im just hoping the body isnt rusted under there too. There are a few rust holes in the floor but the main pans are clean and strong. Under the hood it looks good, with a wash the engine bay should clean up GOOD! The interior is pretty rough, the dash is quite cracked up, some of the control slide knobs are MIA, but they may turn up, its pretty funky so once I get the seats out and break out the shop vac who knows what Ill find. I was happy to find the back seat, it folds down flat and has a metal cover that is attached to the back of it with a piano hinge, it looked like it was all floor back there when I bought it!! The shag carpet headliner in the back is a nice touch
. I do have a few questions, 1st how hard is it to eliminate the slack in the shifter, its pretty sloppy. 2nd, how noisy should the valves be? They sound loud to me but Ive not heard a 22r in years! Im going to change the oil & filter and put some fresh plugs in it before I drive it again so Im hoping that will quiet it down a little, but it very well may just be in my head that its noisy! It doesn't smoke at all and once it got good and hot it stopped missing, but after sitting for at least 6 months its no wonder, that and it was freaking cold last night when I got it running! Im going to investigate the throttle sticking issue too, that's up on my list with bleeding the clutch. How hard is it to get the vent blower fan out? Its got something in it or by it throwing it out of balance and Id like to clean it out. The old school Sony shaft style radio took me back, I don't remember the last time I saw a cassette deck!

I have heard that replacing the shifter seat will clean up the slop in the shifter. I guess it's a little ring of sorts. Have not done mine to rightly know, just what I have read.
The valves, yes it will sound like a diesel. Adjusting the valves is not a real hard job and will probably help out some. I did my HG last Jan and swapped cams as well. I have adjusted the valves twice and it is still loud. Just how they are.
The blower on my 92 and 95 were not all that hard to get to and out. I'm not sure where this one is.

Yeah, adjust the valves, I'm sure they need it. Just make sure you aren't hearing the timing chain.
Definitely replace all fluids.
The shifter seat and socket should be replaced in the tranny. Easy, cheap job.

Search or post if you have questions. Getting the shifter out is really easy, but can be a bit of a pain if you've never done it before. I spent a half hour my first time then gave up for the night. The next day it took 5 seconds...

Also with these early 5 speeds...well they aren't the best. Watch your rpm's. You don't want to shift into 5th until you're up past 60mph. Cruising along at 55-60 in 5th gear will trash your input bearing. I usually wait until I'm up to 65 (and planning on staying there or above) to use 5th.
