How much play is allowable on tranny input shaft?

How much play is allowable on tranny input shaft?
I took the engine out of my truck the other night to do the head gasket, timing chain and put a new clutch in, and when I took ahold of the transmisssion input shaft there was noticable play, side to side. there wasn't too much play in and out of the tranny, mostly side to side. How much is allowasble? It's just whatever one toyota put in the 83s stock, I don't know which one. I'm guessing 1/4-3/8" of play
