holly troubles

I rebuilt my 22r, had it bored out, big cam and performance valve springs and all new stuff. I got a dual port Offenhauser intake with a holly 450 and a high rise kit. It runs perfect, plenty of power and torque. I went from mudding to doing hill climbs and trail riding. So the problem is at angles it wants to die. If I keep in the throttle it runs perfect. When it dies I have to hold it wide open for it to start back up, then its good again. Is there a known fix or something I can do to minimize the affects at an angle? I can go to efi, but the set up I have now just gives me plenty of torque and I dont want to lose it.

What float bowls do you have on it? If they're side hung there's not much you can do other than lower your fuel level in the bowls. Center hung floats don't bounce around as much and work better for off road. You can also use marine needle and seat assemblies, they're spring loaded to deal with vibration, and modify the overflow vents in the bowls with a longer deflector. Adding a 10" piece of fuel hose to the overflow vents (connecting them) with a cutout in the center for a vent. There's other tricks but those make the biggest changes.
You don't need a carb that big on a 4cyl engine, I don't think it needs more than a carb that will flow 325 cfm max even at 8000 rpm. Most people over carb an engine wich actualy hurts performance, I'm running a 390 on a worked Buick 231in my truck and it's good till about 6000.

The problem is fuel is sloshing around in the fuel bowls making the floats bounce and letting more fuel in the bowl than it can handle. This excess fuel has nowhere to go so it's vented into the carb venturis giving the engine a big shot of raw gas flooding it out. the only way to clear it out is to hold the throttle wide open while cranking, side hung floats on an angle will let in more fuel than a center hung float and will continue to flood the engine until it's reasonably level and the needle and seat close.
A high pressure or high volume fuel pump will only make the problem worse unless a regulator is installed to keep the pressure at a usable level, high pressure will just blow the needle off the seat adding more unusable fuel to the engine.
The first thing to do is to lower the float level as much as possible without starving the engine for fuel at WOT.

they are side hung, and I gotta check the float, i think its bout all the way down, is there a way to have the xtra fuel dump out into an external catch bowl or something of that sort?
