Hey Rowdy235...and others re: carb/charge
Hope this gets to you. Not quite sure yet how to send a private message. Anyway, tried the carb cleaner etc and no go. Here's the new twist. My battery lost charge again (charge light is burned out) The first time I thought it was from leaving the dome light on now it is obviously alternator or something... But last time I charged the battery , my idle worked just fine for awhile. Is there some kind of feed back where the engine tries to compensate for lost charge by idling faster?

there is not any kind of high idle for dead battery.
my 81 is having similar issues. the alternator wont kick on at first idle, i have to rev it up to about 3k for it to kick on. and its not idleing right...

the no chage below 3k is what my motorhome did when the voltage regulator kicked the bucket. Might test or get it tested.
As far as the idle, I doubt the problems are related. The next thing to check would be if the choke is working right. Take the air cleaner cover off so you can see the plates. Go inside the truck cab and pump it and start the motor. When you go back out, the choke plate should be slightly opened and opening. Ensure that within a couple of minutes it is fully open.
If that works ok, the only thing I can suggest is taking it to a carburetor shop, maybe they can help.
But by all means, fix the charging problem first.
