Headlight issues

I'm working on my dad's 1982 pickup, where neither the headlight nor tail lights work. The relay 'clicks' when I flip on the headlight switch, so i was wondering what the likely culprits are in a situation like this?

The turn signals and brake lights work fine, if that means anything. I've looked through the 1983 FSM that was kindly posted here not long ago and wasn't sure where the ground wires of interest here would be to check-- not an electrical pro by any means and I'm not sure from the wiring diagram where to locate the grounds on the truck, so as to clean them.

If you have any points of interest that might be causing this I'm all ears, and thanks much.

I THINK that the lighting grounds directly to the frame. I would follow the wiring from the lights back to the switch and see where those grounds go to. I haven't tackled the wiring in my truck yet, but when I was breaking down my truck in my build, I noticed that there was a ground off of the harness going to the frame (rear lights) and to the cab body (front lights). I'm not at the electrical stage of my rebuild yet and there is no telling what the PO did to my truck, but that is just what I noticed on mine; maybe it'll help you out.

Found the answer, sitting in front of me. D'oh!

I wish the FSM was better at describing the battery and what wires come off it a bit more-- it has 5 pages each of instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble your starter motor and alternator ($50 parts, each one), and nothing in the electrical troubleshooting section regarding headlights and the connection to the battery except a mention about a fusible link-- with no pictures of what that looks like or where it is. That's it for my rant, thanks for listening.

I had been staring at the dangling link for weeks and thought it was for an accessory I didn't have. Never occurred to me it was the juice for the headlights. Even looking at the wiring diagram now I still can't tell how the current gets from the battery to the headlight relay. (Shows what I know, I suppose.)

I am having similar issues. 1983 Headlights don't work. Relay does not click on. Chiltons wiring diagram is horrible. Traced 12 volts through relay up to hazard switch. Do not know where to go from there. Anyone have a factory wiring diagram for a 1983 pickup 4x4

Search for the thread I have to download an 83 FSM. It has the factory wiring diagrams in it.
