Fuel Pump Check valve?

I have a 1979 2wd 20r with a in tank fuel pump. Why does it have a check valve between the pump and the line? Can I bypass it? The new one I got from autozone is an airtex, which doesnt include the check valve.

I also had to cut my negative and positive wires because it wasnt a direct plug in. Also the strainer set up was alot different. Just FYI in case you got any advice on these.

You have a check valve to help keep the fuel and pressure in the lines. Anti drainback valve I believe.
