Front main seal leak?

If you aren't already, it's also good practice to plan ahead. Anytime you know you're going to work on something, be patient: spray it with PB Blaster or something similar, then do the job tomorrow. Or at least a couple hours later. Best to start a day or even longer ahead of time, though. Saves a lot of the grief caused by stripped or broken-off bolts.
I haven't been around in this forum much since I sold my 83 so I don't know how much of this stuff is "duh" common sense to you already, so I apologize if I'm giving stupid advice!

Looks totally normal to me.
The breathers sit on top of a nut, which will be completely covered in dirt and grease. Get a rag or scraper or something and scrape around the base of the breather and the nut will be unearthed.
Since it's a "floating" cap over a vent pipe, you can't really get in there to clean it mechanically. And though your truck is pretty dang clean, it's probably still got 36 years of gunk. Submerge and soak overnight. I'd use brake cleaner.

This trucks my pass time project for fun and the satisfaction of doing stuff.
my other vehicles are new, not much tinkering needed....yet.
