The gears are right. It goes forward for a few then starts acting but in reverse it drives. I may just pull it all down grease until I get some money to the whole thing

you locking the hubs/4x4 on dry pavement?
the symptoms you describe sound like mismatched gears or your front diff set up was done by an idiot

huh?
the third needs to be pulled?
So how do you know the thirds match front and rear?
Sounds like the guy before the guy you got it from screwed the guy before you and your guy screwed you.
Thirds (differentials) use gear oil in the housings...the knuckles (birfields) use grease.

There is a sticky on rebuilding a front axle, but it sounds like you might need more. Mostly diagnosis....

Dude, I'm not sure you understanding what's going on here.

Buying a new axle? You are going to have to find out what ratio is in the rear to match in the front.

If it was me I would pull the third and check the the ratio and see it the ring gear or pinion are trashed. Start there and also you really shouldn't drive in 4wd on pavement, it can act funny.

What exactly do you plan on greasing that will magically fix this issue?

I really don't ever drive it on pavement unless I'm crawling around at my house or the holes around town. I plan on grease all the bearing and birfields but im going pull down the third and check everything to make sure its all good.

ok here it is: the overwhelming suspect of your problem is mismatched gears in the rear and the front. It would seem that the rear gear ratio is 4.10 and the front is possibly 4.56 or 3.90. What this means is when you are driving in 4 wheel drive the front and rear are spinning at different speeds. So when you put it in 4wd the front will bind to a halt. The only way to check this is to pull the 3rd members from the front and the rear and to count the teeth on each. Count the ring teeth then divide by the pinion teeth. i.e. 43 ring teeth and 10 pinion = 4.30 gear ratio
