Explain the carb float please

What does the float do? I took the top off my carb this weekend and messed with the float a bit, because when my carb came back from being rebuilt the fuel level was all the way up at the top. Been that way about a year now and it seems fine, but I wanted it where it should be.

My FSM shows two adjustments. Don't remember the exact phrasing now...but there's a high float level and low float level that can be adjusted, and it sort of shows what to bend to adjust the level. But which way? If my fuel level is higher than I want it in the sight glass, should I be bending the float up or down? And messing with it made me wonder exactly what it does in there...anyone?

the float allows a certain amount of fuel in the carb before shutting off the valve that lets in the fuel so it doesn't constantly pump fuel into the motor. it exactly like a toilet. if you want the level to go down then you bend it down.

when air is passing threw the carb it draws fuel from the bowl. the float is a metering system that keeps the correct amount of fuel in the bowl. whether your at WOT (the float is all the way down and letting in as much air as possible) or idling (float all the way at the top and almost stopping all fuel flow)

I just did this yesterday for a 22r but have yet to put it on the truck. i just adjusted it to the prescribed measurements (48mm to top of float for wide open, 10ish mm to bottom of float closed. all measurements from gasket surface).

If you want less fuel in the bowl you would make it close earlier, so bend it (slightly) toward the top of the carb so that the valve closes earlier. (right?)

"up" and "Down" are relative terms since when you do this the carb top is upside down.

Great, thanks. I was just sort of bending, I didn't measure, and I didn't have the lid completely off, so it was right side up. But yeah, they are relative terms. I mean if the float is right side up. Thanks a lot! That should help.
