early diesel engines
So.. my uncle has a early (79-83) diesel 2wd pickup that he has had since I was a kid (20+years) and he told me I could have it😁 so I've had at least 10 22r trucks and this is the first oil burner I've came across and I can't really find any information on these, what do I need to look for? I'm prepared to completely go through the engine if necessary.

its most likely the L or some call it 1L.the 2L started in i believe 84.definitely replace timing belt.tension and idler pulleys. unless you know they've been replaced. also why you have it apart do water pump. diesel is a interference motor. belt brakes jacks up motor.

Very much worth it. Not that slow, 30 plus mpg. One of the most overbuilt engines every manufactured, 500,000 plus. Increasing in value greatly. I have an engine manual if you pm me an email. There are two timing belts for this engine. 6/82 build and before. The one that my vin called for was wrong. I have the other one if yours takes it you can have it for shipping. One style has a half moon tooth, the other a square 132 tooth and 127, don't remember which is which. Here is my belt that didn't work, nobody biting on fleabay. Newer models eliminated a idler pulley.

I'd like to use it for a backup/firewood hauler and drive it to work from time to time.
honestly I'm really just intrigued about it and want to take it apart just for the hell of it possibly put a turbo on it at some point?

Honestly I'm not really sure, it's been 10+ years since I've seen it haha. I believe it's sitting under a bluff where my uncle parks all of his old farm vehicles. It could be completely rusted out (i hope not) I have a 79 4x4 that has a completely worn out 22r that I plan on putting the diesel in if the truck it's in is too far gone.

I would like to buy a diesel L52 if anyone has one reasonable. Mine has some issues and I don't want to be down. I wonder if anyone has retrofitted the clutch slave on the gas burner side and used a gas transmission. Mine had a burned out fuse link in the harness leaving the drivers side battery. Then the fuel separator was pulling air. All orings no longer available from Toyota. After removing the separator and plumbing up starts every time immediately. Odometer hung up at 342000.

If the truck is not degraded to the point of being dangerous (brakes, frame, etcetra) and it runs... get it patched together and use it. I owned a 82 with the "L" engine, but a bad frame too far gone, and tooo many critical brake and drive train parts beyond help. I wanted to swap the engine into my '83 SR5. But it would mean complete fuel system swap, and I found out that I could not get ANY parts for it except for the ones that are on the gassers (like mirrors!). So I sold it.
But it started easy and ran, had only 160k miles. I tried to rebuiild the injectors, but the internal parts were worn badly, and I could NOT find ANY replacements. Pretty sad, because they really are bomb proof engines.
