Something weird is going on in my 82 2wd 5speed... not sure what, but the faster i go as i shift through my gears there is an awful rattling noise. It literally sounds like a couple pennies in an empty coffee can being shaken... but it's a spinning sound too... all of a sudden it grinds like it locking in to the clutch or something and stops. I'm pretty sure it's the clutch. ANY OPINIONS OR SUGGESTIONS???

 

where is the sound coming from? the shifter, the tranny,(front or back?) the motor? i would assume its coming from the clutch area, which makes me wonder how the clutch pedal feels, super squishy and will go all the way to the floor or does it feel tight like its supposed to? if its going to the floor i would assume the clutch is going out. whens the last time the clutch was replaced? as far as you know.

 

Oh it could also be a bearing. lets say the PILOT bearing. thats a pretty normal occurrance in these old pickups.

 

Only with the clutch in? Clutch out? Both? I had a similar noise but it happend mostly just when I'd put the clutch in. I replaced so many things it's hard to say...but in the end, it started happening when I'd take my foot of the gas, too, to coast, and it actually turned out to be the carb backfiring, surprisingly enough...

But it could also be u-joints. Or the tranny itself.
