I have an 83 Toyota SR5. 22r, I put a w56a tranny, trail gear dual adapter kit and a gear driven transfer case in it. I shortened the driveline about 1.5 ft to fit everything. I made a horse collar crossmember for it. When I first got everything together it seemed to drive fine. I decided to throw a 4inch lift on it and Flowmaster exhaust. Thats when I noticed a crazy rattle. Mabey just because it was now quiter than just a straight pipe thats why I noticed it now. Wheather I drive it down the street or set it up on jackstands it still makes the noise. It sounds like a bad bearing or metal rattleing and it resonates throughout the differential up to the bellhousing on the tranny. I take the driveline out and run it through the gears and it makes no noise at all.

So I figured my driveline was at too much of an angle so I created my own pack and dropped it back to around stock. Driveline angle much better now but still doing the same thing. I feel the rear differential and it feels like its coming from there. So I changed the differential. Still have the metal grinding or bad bearing sound. It seems to only happen when I get the tires spinning about 3rd gear and it gets worse as I go higher. I am to the point of just saying screw it dropping the tranny/transfer case and getting rebuild kit for everything.

But before I do that, anyone have any suggestions? Or anyone know of certain bearings that like to fail on either the transfer case or tranny. Or mabey a place to look first. Oh I also have my front driveline disconnected. I can try and get a video so u guys can hear it. Any place I should check for movement or play?

you guys dont have nothin huh? Since I cant afford the rebuilds I guess Ill cut the truck up and sell it as scrap metal...

its hard to know what type of rattle it could be or whats causing it... there are a 10000 things that can rattle on a 27 year old truck thats been wheeled....

 

Very true, Well I have come to the conclusion, Im just going to start buying the rebuild kits and when I have them for the tranny and transfer case Ill pull everything at once and rebuild it at once. Prolly throw in a new cluth while I have it apart. I was just wondering if there are bearings that are notorious for failure in these things. I am just gonna rebuild it all...
