Crank pulley bolt stripped - HELP
Alright, so I got that first truck that I showed you guys...got it for way less than the original price.
Im making this as short as i can since im pissed but any help would be appreciated.
I was on the highway yesterday (two hours after buying it) and it put all kinds of white smoke up. So I was gonna pull over then most of it went away so i kept going. Then i lost all power so i rolled off the ramp and pulled over. So i get out and there is oil everywhere all down the side of the car and all over the whole engine. ...so i got towed back home.
We seemed to have traced the problem to the gasket behind the crank pulley. We took it off and the gasket it so messed up so i replaced it and i tried to put the bolt back in.... I followed the instructions on this site:
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/timingchain/
I stripped the bolt holding on the pulley and i dont know how. I had my torque wrench set to 116 so now i cant loosen it or tighten it.
So...im not sure what to do about it...can i drive it the way it is? I mean its pretty tight... I dont know what the helll i would have to do to get it off.
Cool how i pay for a running truck and the thing breaks down in 2 hours...
Any help would be awesome.

Dang, that sucks.
I'd probably drive the truck to where ever you need to be and then tear it apart and do it right. Get in there and find out what's muffed up. Atleast you can do it in a controlled enviroment and not on the side of the road nex month.

Which bolt head?
I have welded new metal back on and beat a socket on, i have also welded a nut to the top and got them off that way. But not knowing which one you are talking about makes it hard to determine the best approach.

I second what CJM said. Bolt offs or "Bolt Grips" (Irwin) make getting those nasty stripped bolts off much, much easier. Then, you have the tools if something like that ever happens again. I stripped a headbolt during a tear down recently and that was by far the easiest way to do it. Had the bolt out in less than three minutes.
CJM, weren't you the guy that recommend them to me? (Hmmm....must reread that thread.)

Welding a new bolt head on or a bolt will work, but not everyone can weld or even reach some areas to weld.

Its all torn apart in my garage now...i thought it would be a quick fix, just a gasket change then the bolt head stripped... Im gonna try one more thing then i guess ill get those bolt grips that you guys said.
Pisses me off that this happened the first day i had this...i feel like i got screwed here. Ill let you know if i get this thing off, going to do it now...

Sorry for your misfortune.
There are worse one's out there. Someone here in Spokane bought a used POS car from some pot lot.
They stopped to have lunch or dinner on their way home.
When they finished dinner hopped in the car, and discovered it had no reverse.
It made the local news. LMAO

Yea, so I cant get this thing out. I guess I will have to get bolt grips tomorrow. I can't weld so bolt grips seem to be my only option.
I'm not sure how tight this bolt is...but i tried lots of stuff to get it off vice grips on it and stuff. Is it a really bad idea to just throw it back together and drive it the way it is?
There seemed to be confusion on which bolt head i stripped; it is the one that goes threw the center of the crankshaft pulley and holds it into place.
Thanks for the help

Well i figured out why it stripped the head of the bolt...my torque wrench is broken so i over torqued it massively. I got some bolt grippers to pull it off but i had to order a new bolt so im going to run it the way it is and then put the new one on later. Hopefully it will be OK.
There is oil all over my spark plugs....anyone know why? Is this really bad?
