Cold Start Noise Revisited

Last Winter I noticed a bad noise on cold morning starts. After a little research and this post: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...roblem-162846/

I though it was my powersteering pump or pulley. This summer I changed the ps fluid, with new, great AMSOIL ATF, and the issue is far worse this year. After searching the posts I wonder if it is timing chain slap. I don't think the timing chain has ever been done in this truck (170,000 miles) and my truck also seems to be running lean, because it also is really slow (less power) in the cold.

So here is a link to a video w/ the sound my truck makes in the morning... pulley/ belt driven something or maybe something more serious?

I plan on taking off both belts this weekend and seeing if the sound still exsists, but what does this sound like to you guys?

Not fun! I don't have direct experience...but I think your idea is dead on. Take off the belts, one at a time, and see if it goes away. I don't think it's the timing chain, but I could be wrong. I'd say it's almost definitely a pulley bearing or fan clutch.

But if you still have the original timing chain I'd say it's time to have a look at it anyways before something bad happens.

That doesnt sound like the chain, more like the ps pump is on its way out. A couple times in your video when you let off the gas I could hear it better. Sounds like the pump to me. Do what you said, take the belt off and if the noise goes away it is the pump for sure.

Thanks everyone! This morning I took of the ps belt (in 2 degree weather) and it didn't make the sound in about 10 sec, so I put it back on, and it didn't make the sound. It took about 30 sec of running for the sound to arrive and then It doesn't go away until I am driving down the road a few minutes (so it happens while idealing in the cold). so I need to let it ideal longer with the belt off, and take both belts off.
