Clutch affecting idle

When I let the clutch out at idle it seems to drag on the engine. What causes this and how do I fix it?

Thanks,
Randy

I'm trying to decode your post, so the word "drag" leads to think your clutch is slipping, maybe a video?

No, I mean it feels like the clutch is partially engaging; transmission in neutral, start engine, let out clutch and it is grabbing. What would cause this?

The clutch IS engaged with the flywheel if you have the pedal out and in neutral - It just isn't in a gear to turn.

There is "drag" when the transmission is in neutral. The input shaft is still spinning as well as a few bearings. When you let "out" the clutch in Neutral you will see a minor drop in rpm and then a recovery as the parts spin up.

Red face

As the temperature drops the gear oil in the transmission gets thicker so the colder it is the more you notice it.

Being it is likely a 4x4 you also have the gear oil in the transfer case

It might be the wrong gear oil for the temperature.

I had one case where the gear oil was never changed and enough moisture from condensation that it froze now that was a fun one to figure out.
