cat/exhaust problem?

hey the 1980 4x4 20r my wife drives started rattleing like crazy so she got out and its sounded like a rock in a tin can comeing from the catylitic converter the she kept drivein and there was a huge backfire more than usual haha...and the the rattleing stopped and where the exhaust comes from the manifold was glowin red.now its louder than hell everythinsconnected.is it possiable for this to happen if your cat goes out?

I would think ur car took a dump cut it out or replace if u have to keep it see what happens im assuming u had very little flow so it got hot the backfire can get worse with exhaust restriction

If you want to keep your cat converter, take it off and see how clogged it is. You can take some lacquer thinner and pour into it or you can soak it in some laquer thinner. Some people will pour it in there tank and drive around and see it if helps.
If you take the cat off, you dont want to break any bolts. You will have to probally go slow with the help of PB Blaster.
