I got a topper for my truck from the junk yard a couple weeks ago and I need to get a key for it or get it re-keyed. I don't know who makes it to try and get a key for it and I looked up the lock code but there are multiple keys for that number. I would have to drill out several rivets to get the lock handle off too but I dont have a rivet gun to put it back on. Right now it is unlocked. Any ideas?

 

You can google "T handle lock" and see what comes up. This one is only $8.19 plus shipping on Amazon. You can go to a locksmith and have a key made but that would cost more money and the chrome on yours is pitting.

Honestly I never thought about a new lock all together. I emailed that guy on eBay and asked him about my lock.

 

Nice pictures so it was easy to see the lock code. You'd need a rivet tool to change locks but for the $$ I'd probably get a new one.

 

I would pick up a whole new handle now that people know how easy it is to get keys..
Busting out the flapper wheel to fix that on the rear hatch of my Trekker.

Hit up your local Ace Hardware for some good alternatives to rivets that you can get and still be fairly secure. I like the 'one way' screws. You need a special tool to get them back out.

Or some canopy handles have the fasteners built in. I found matched sets on ebay.

I ordered that lock off Amazon. My friend just said he has a rivet gun so we are gonna try it.

It seems the topper might spread or shifted some. The bars that run into the side when the handle is shut come up short on one side so we are gonna extend it to make it fit better and be more secure (as an old camper top can be).

 

I'm hoping the senior members can chime in with some info on who built these toppers. Very curious on them.

 

Not sure about the brand but I think you got a good score. I have seen similar canopies the small smoked windows are usually cracked.

 

I think it was great score personally. It's neat to find a topper as old as my truck to give it it's own look. For $100 and pretty much nothing major wrong besides no key and some latch issues (and no shocks for the rear glass) I am very satisfied. As of right now I consider it my best junkyard score.

 

I had the same topper on my 80 when I bought it.....didn't need it and couldn't give it away (craigslist)....so I cut it up and brought it to the dump...I already have a real nice one that came on my 81 hanging up in the barn if ever needed ....but I personally like the look of going topless

 

You oughta give that thing a good cleaning and it will look really sharp. I use this stuff called On & Off on my boat to get rid of mildew and grime and my friend uses it on his whole fleet of 40some jetskis and parasail boats at the season to keep them looking good. It works AMAZINGLY well! You have to be careful though as it is extremely caustic and will eat your skin up quick - a little dab will do ya. Just squirt some on, brush the grime off with a deck brush and rinse really well with water while scrubbing. You'll truly be surprised at how well it shines up. From there, if the gelcoat is still good you can wax it to a shine or scuff it up and apply some more gelcoat.
