Bit off more then I can chew.

78 Toyota Hilux sr5 Manual. In January of this year I got engine rebuilt at a shop. Ever since then its been running like a tractor and burning oil at an alarming rate about a quart a week if I drive it a lot. Went back to the shop 3 times for the same problems and the shop was not able to remedy the problem. In the mean time I could not find a leak. When parked there was no evidence that it was leaking, or smell of burning oil the smoke out of the tail pipe was only noticeable if I would stay idling for more then 20 minutes. In the past week its been really hot here in LA and the truck has been running really hot. And now I see where all the oil is going. Its leaking out the driver side behind cylinder # 4. If parked it will leave a puddle the size of a pancake.

There is no point of going back to the builders, its obvious they don't know what they are doing with this truck. So I bought a set of gaskets from Lce Performance and tore it down down today. Got to the block and inspected the head and the gasket also noticed the camshaft and lifters are worn and need to be replaced. That might explain the tractor sound. Also cylinder #3 is full of carbon and the spark plug was also caked up with dried carbon all over it.

I don't know if that gung was from the old gasket or the current either way I have to clean it up, before reinstalling the new one.

Cylinder 3 is full of carbon and its really caked on there. Also why is the large valve different then all the other large valves? I'm assuming that is the exhaust? Has any one seen this before is this common?

I could use some help here. I'm in way over my head this is a simple engine but I have never done something like this.

Received more parts this week and spend Saturday all day running around for oils, gasket sealer and some special tools that I did not have to be able to remove the valve stems and more break clean. Installed the new springs and rocker arms.

Also new camshaft as the old one had a lot of visible grooves in it.

Also found a Easter egg. One of the rocker arm anchors is broken. Can really by these individually so I just JB weld it not to clog the wholes and then reinstalled it and align up the wholes with the wholes on the pipes that run through it.

Then installed and torqued everything down will be putting the head back on the block in then next few days.
