my 83 toyota 4x4 just got a new head she had 285k on er

i got it all back together and the timing is perfect but the carb backfires
she idles fine sounds good ,,seems to run a little ruff but nothings clanking around..

im scared to adjust the carb because it was fine when i took it apart

could a be a tooth off timing? in the chain?
is 0 on the time guide TDC

ive played with the distributer so much i gave me a head ache ..

friends think its timing ? it also has no power (wont drive)
otherwise i would take it to the tuner

You have a timing issue or you have your valve timing off. when the valve cover is removed, make sure that the mark(or dot? may only be visible with the chain removed) on the timing gear off of the camshaft is pointing to the mark on the very top of your rocker arm assembly. These 2 marks should line up when the 0 is on the mark of the oil pump and your engine is at TDC. Your rotor should be pointed to the num. 1 cyl. at this time too. If this is true, and it still does this, then you have other engine problems.

Did you replace your timing chain as well?

i recently put a new head on my 85 22r and had the same problem after everything was put back together. i found out that the distributor was off 1 tooth. but fist pull your #1 spark plug and put your finger over the hole while someone barely cranks the motor until ur finger gets pushed out with a pop now readjust the distr. to the #1 plug. put plug in and start

man i went back and forth with that distributer...i bet ive taken the cover off at least 100 times and im not kidding

so your saying you had perfect timing light time and it still did this

this thing backfires hard enough to blow the webber carbs butterflys to be stuck in the intake then she dies from o2 starvation
