Adding PS to non-PS truck

Good afternoon everyone.

I’m really enjoying my ‘82 I recently purchased and am already getting a list of things I want to do. I’m planning to convert the push/pull steering to high steer and while I’m at it I want to add power steering. I have put together a list of what all I need but I have a few questions.
Here’s my list so far
Power steering conversion
  • IFS Steering Box from 86-88 or 89-95 pickup/4Runner
  • Mount bracket (Steering frame brace for steering box)
  • Pressure line
  • Cooler with lines
  • Power steering pump and pulley
  • Power steering pump mounting bracket
  • Power steering pump reservoir
  • Pulley add on that bolts to the front of the crank pulley (One groove pulley attaches to front of two groove pulley)
  • Idler bracket/pulley
Is this everything?
What year trucks can I get the proper crank pulley from?
What year trucks can I get the idler bracket/pulley from?
How do I mount the steering column to the new IFS box?

I’m smack in the middle of this myself on my 1980. Parts I have on so far
ifs box -1988 4runner
pump/bracket - 85 truck
tensioner - 85 I think
extra crank pulley off any 20r/22r
i have to have the reservoir from an early pickup that mounts to the side wall not on the inner fender, I found this out now I have one of each haha.

I THINK this is how the res goes in

Pump and pulley

Res

Tensioner

I have not routed any hoses yet, to be honest I need some research to see how they need to be routed and which ones go where. I sourced almost everything on eBay.

Thanks!!

Why did you have to get 2 different reservoirs? Why did the first one not work?

How will you connect the steering column to the new IFS box?

the columns are the same. Slips right on. The reservoirs changed Sometime in the early 80s the later models bolt to the fender and the earlier models bolt to the side of the engine bay. It’s not possible to bolt the fender mounting style onto our vendors without a custom bracket

Thanks! That helps a lot.
Did you mount your box in the same location or move it forward

i stuck the box on as far forward as I could get it without cutting into that body mount. This was my first attempt at a hysteer conversion so I’m no expert. Having a buddy come over will help a lot for mounting the IFS box. It’s heavy.

I went to a pick-n-pull today looking for a bench seat to use while I pull out my buckets to recover them. I found a trashed out ‘82 2wd that had the ugliest bench seat I’ve ever seen.

While I was there I was looking for other Toyota’s and found an ‘89 4Runner. I started getting things off for powersteering but the only thing I couldn’t get off was the pitman arm so I tried to pull it by leaving the pitman arm on, but the cotter pin pin was rusted too bad. I didn’t have the right tools so I left it. I’m going to go back this week and try again.

it also had the power steering pump, reservoir, and cooler. Should I go ahead and get those parts? I’m worried the pump is shot and I am unsure if that’s something they sell rebuild kits for. As far as the cooler it didn’t look like much of a cooler. It only had a few bends and was very short, but I don’t know where else I could get one. Anyone know if I can mount that reservoir?

Yeah, the cooler looks small but it works good being in front of the radiator

I did finish the project and it has worked great ever since with no issues. I hooked my steering up to a hy-steer kit though, I needed to get away from the push/pull for my purposes. The factory cooler is dainty I admit but works fine. If you need pictures let me know.

I am going high steer. I’ve just been accumulating all the necessary parts. Too bad I already bought an idler pulley, idler bracket, and crankshaft pulley. I had sourced them from different places. This 4Runner has it all...wish I would have waited

can I see some pics of your setup? I’d like to see how you set up the power steering system and high steer if you can
